This is an antique Dutch Silver .833 Sterling Silver Peppermint Box or stash box, snuff box, pill box. It's hallmarked by the Dutch Lion Passant indicating .833 purity Dutch silver - and the maker's mark indicates it was made by Cornelis Capoen, registered in Schoonhoven 1900-1920 and noted for his Peppermint Boxes. There is a small "g" on the side of the casing indicating it's dated from 1902.
The whale designs are all hand made, and the designs are unique. It looks like a mythical whale coming out of the water and towering above the waves. This could be something cultural or perhaps even a tribute to Moby Dick.
The box is in VERY rough shape. It has dings, dents, patina, and even looks to have a small tear in the side of the silver, but that is the history of this piece. A very hard and rough life of 125 years now. The box does open and close properly, and the lid sits on securely.
The box is approximately 1.75 inches tall and 1 inch by 1 inch wide.
You can see the small tear along the edge where the silver was sealed into the box format and the folds are seen as well. Please see pictures for details.
I am not looking for much of anything - just enough to cover the cost of the silver and my shipping costs.
Hopefully this box will survive yet another 125 years and give maybe another traveler a nice little place to stuff peppermint for the trip!
